Sonoma Defeats Stanford 13-6, Move to 3-0 on the Season

by Kyle Smith

The Seawolves secured their first WCLL victory of the season, defeating conference opponent Stanford University by the score of 13-6 on Saturday, February 8th at Sunrise Park.

Sonoma State's offense was led by standout performances by Junior Captain Benen Powers (3 goals, 2 assists), Freshman midfielder Matt McCurdy (3 goals), Senior midfielder Devin Schulte (2 goals, 1 assist) and Junior midfielder Ryan Kane (2 goals, 1 assist). On defense, Noma was led by another strong performance in cage by Sophomore Riley Corcoran (12 saves, 6 goals allowed) and strong play from Junior LSM Dustin Smith (6 ground balls), Sophomore Liam Crow (4 ground balls), and Junior Captain Dylan Hardy (5 ground balls).

The Seawolves took the lead early in the first when Nick Frangione scored a nice goal inside on a draw-and-dump feed from Ryan Kane. Kane got off to a particularly hot start, as 3 of the first 5 goals scored by SSU were either scored or assisted by the local Rancho Cotate High School product. After taking advantage of extra man opportunities on nice finishes by Freshman DJ Santiago and McCurdy, the Seawolves held a 6-3 lead going into the half.

The Seawolves controlled the game from there on out, extending their lead to 8-3 midway through the third quarter on a feed from Powers to Schulte. Powers then went on a roll, scoring the next 3 goals for the Seawolves unassisted, one of which hit the back of the net just prior to the end of the shot clock expiring.

In the fourth quarter, it was Santiago who flashed his shooting ability on a beautiful step-down shot that found the nearside corner, generating a notable roar from the home crowd. Schulte and McCurdy capped off the final scoring to secure a 13-6 victory for Sonoma.

This victory brings the Seawolves record to 3-0 on the season. Next up, Sonoma State will continue conference play against long time rival UC Santa Barbara at home on Saturday, February 15th at 12pm at Rancho Cotate High School
