The Seawolves Defeat UC Davis 15-9 in Season Opener

by Kyle Smith

The Sonoma State Men's lacrosse team secured the first victory in 2025 in all of college lacrosse on Saturday, defeating UC Davis 15-9 at Sonoma Valley High School. The Seawolves were led by standout performances by Senior Devin Schulte (4 Goals), Juniors Benen Powers (2 Goals, 2 Assists) and Dylan Hardy (7 Ground Balls), Sophomore Riley Corcoran (12 saves), and Freshmen DJ Santiago (2 Goals, 3 Assists), and Matt McCurdy (3 Goals).

To start the game, it was DJ Santiago who ran by his man at X to score a lefty goal as he crossed goal-line-extended. The Aggies answered back shortly after, burying a bounce shot to tie the game 1-1. Offensive Captain Benen Powers and LSM Dustin Smith each took advantage of fast break opportunities to score later in the first. At the end of the first quarter, the Seawolves trailed 3-4.

In the second quarter, the Seawolves settled in and regained the lead, with back-to-back scores by Devin Schulte on dodges down the right alley. Early in the second, Riley Corcoran stepped in the cage and proceeded to play lights out for the remainder of the game. Corcoran would finish the contest with 12 saves and only 4 goals allowed for an impressive 75% save percentage. Freshman Josh Cooke scored his first collegiate goal by picking up a loose ball and burying it in the bottom corner. Then, it was Schulte again who sniped the corner on the run to give the Seawolves a 7-5 lead going into halftime.

In the second half, Freshman Matt McCurdy scored his first of three goals of the day on a nice assist from Dustin Smith (1 goal, 1 assist). The Noma defense played better as the game progressed, led by Junior Captain Dylan Hardy's seven ground balls and Corcoran's stingy presence in the cage.

Later in the third, both McCurdy and Santiago showed off their shooting ability by scorching time and room shots into the top corners, extending the Seawolves lead. Senior Nick Frangione also scored an unassisted goal on a well placed lefty shot before the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth, SSU's offense continued to attack the cage, scoring three goals in the final quarter to put the game away. It was late in the fourth that yet another Seawolf scored his first career goal when Sophomore Anders Bostrom was set up by Powers on a pass inside that required nifty footwork by Bostrom as he tiptoed around the crease and scored. The game ended with the Seawolves on top, 15-9.

The Seawolves host Oregon State on Saturday, 2/1/25 at Sunrise Park in Rohnert Park at 1pm.
